Scouts and Leaders: there is a Boy Scout Electronics, and Radio Merit Badge Training course at the Lake Washington Technical Institute on Saturday April 13th, 9 am to 6:00pm. The Electronics Merit Badge will be presented in the Morning and the Radio Merit Badge in the afternoon.

This material will be covered by groups of 10 scouts moving between 5 learning tables in the morning and 5 different learning tables in the afternoon. Parents and or group /troop leaders can tag along for their team fun. These tables are “cool;” featuring electronic kits building, wireless uses, electronic principals, solar power, battery operations, careers and much more. You will see and use handheld radios, repeaters, digital radios and have a radio talk time of 10 minutes. All of this is fun and happens at the “speed of light”. These relate to STEM subjects in school and colleges love-em, just like they love scout background and Amateur licenses.

And there is more, Radio, Electronics and Electricity Merit Badges fits the STEM / NOVA Crunch , Whoosh and Start your Engine Program. Most of the Electricity Merit Badge is covered during the day. Merit Badge counselors will be on site to help; but it is your responsibility to fill out the paper work and any prep work or follow up.

So come and get started and be on your way to the big STEM Merit Badge SWEEP and on target for the Supernova Award.

Amateur radio operators, “HAMS”, will be the event coaches; a lot of these will be Scouts and Scouter’s that have their FCC Amateur License. You will see their new Scout Uniform RADIO OPERATOR strip patch. That day, you can even get one of these too!!!

Well as a last event of the day the FCC Amateur test will be given for Scouts, participants, parents and Leaders if you want to take it; you get the official BSA strip with a successful test. Merit Badges earned that day will be via your next court of honor.

But wait!!! that is not all!!! THERE is MORE, Later this year there will be more fun events: balloon launch, Scout nets on Repeaters, GPS games, talk around the world, JOTA campout, and maybe a contact with the International Space Station.

4th Annual Turkey Burner Classic 50-Miler

November 13, 2012 By: Kevin Category: Announcement, Events, Merit Badge

When: 7 a.m., Friday, Nov. 23, 2012 (the day after Thanksgiving)
Where: The Shoreline Top Foods Store, 1201 N. 175th Street, Shoreline, WA 98133

We meet at 7 a.m. for free refreshments provided by Top Foods and then leave by 7:30 a.m. to ride north on the Interurban Trail to Everett and back — a distance of 50 miles, which can fulfill the Cycling Merit Badge requirement.

We take a fairly leisurely pace and make a couple of stops for hot chocolate and have lunch at the downtown Everett McDonalds (bring a few extra $$).

Please make sure your bike is in good working order and have your 10 essentials. Please… no cotton! We do not offer breakdown service or repair. This event is simply an opportunity to burn some post-Thanksgiving calories and ride with fellow scouts and scouters. We always have a great time.

In case of snow or substantial ice we will reschedule. Please check the Troop 853 website in the event of extremely severe weather. We do ride in the rain (and we love it).

Merit badge opportunities

June 16, 2012 By: Kevin Category: Events, Merit Badge

The boys of Troop 151 just experienced a couple of great merit badge opportunities this month.  The first was the Railroading Merit badge.  10 boys took a 2 hour (one way) trip down to just south of Mt. Rainier to spend nearly 8 hours in a real train yard.  They had a great experience learning about the restoration, history, and career paths of railroading from the very dedicated people at the Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad. They got to get up close to some real live steam engines and got a ride on a restored passenger car pulled by an older diesel engine. Really got a scale of how big, complex, and amazing these machines really are.  See some pictures of this trip!

Just a couple weeks later, several Toop 151 scouts were able to attend a 3 hour session at the University of Washington to learn about music, musical instruments, and performers.  Many thanks to the UW marching band for giving their time and energy to the boy scouts to put on this event!  It gave them a bit of knowledge about music, a taste of college, and the opportunity to hear some great musicians.  The best part was the exciting performance provided by the partial marching band that were there.  See a few pictures here.
